Bioko is an island located in the Gulf of Guinea, 32 km off the coast of Cameroon. It is part of the territories that comprise Equatorial Guinea. It has an area of 2,017 km² and a population (2005) of 130,000. Formerly known as Fernando Poo.
The nature of the island is one of the most endangered of Equatorial Africa. It inhabits a wide variety of endemic monkey species in danger of collapsing. The largest of all species is the drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus), whose population declined over 30% in recent years, and from which they derive two subspecies, one of which is endemic to the island, and the other lives in the continent. The red colobus (Procolobus pennantii), victim of poaching for shotguns, dropped to almost 45%. Other species are red-eared monkey (Cercopithecus erythrotis), the white-nosed guenon (Cercopithecus nictitans), Preuss 's monkey (Cercopithecus preussi), black colobus (Colobus satanas), Pennant's red colobus (Procolobus rufomitratus) and crowned guenon (Cercopithecus pogonias). All the above species are in serious danger of extinction because they are used for human consumption and traded as pets. In addition many of them do not survive to zoos, because they require strict ecosystem, and little adaptation they have outside of their natural habitat.
